Traffic Advisory: Temporary Lane Closure at St. Bernard Ave. and N Broad

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 13, 2023 6:06 PM

NEW ORLEANS — Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) contractor Wallace C. Drennan, has implemented a temporary lane closure in the 2700 block of St. Bernard Avenue between Broad and Paris streets for approximately five weeks. The closure is necessary to accommodate waterline installation work as part of the St. Bernard Transmission Main construction project.  Signage and traffic control measures such as barrels and fencing are on onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.

During this time, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on St. Bernard Avenue between Broad and Paris streets. Motorists are advised to use caution as large trucks and heavy machinery will be hauling materials in the area. There will be additional signage and safety measures will be in place during Jazz and Heritage Festival weekends. As construction continues in the area, SWBNO outreach will update the public as the project progresses.

We appreciate your patience as we upgrade your water system.

Transmission Main Projects

The replacement of the 50-inch water transmission main in the 2700 block of St. Bernard (TM002 - St Bernard Ave) is the 5th Transmission Main Project that SWBNO has replaced since 2021.  This transmission main program is funded by FEMA and managed by SWBNO in cooperation with the City of New Orleans as part of the Joint Infrastructure Recovery Roads (JIRR) Program.

There are six future transmission main projects scheduled. These projects are needed to proactively replace water lines as part of SWBNO’s commitment to infrastructure resiliency and reliability, as outlined in our five-year strategic plan.
