Construction on 48-inch water main near Carrolton Water Plant; Slightly Lower-than-Normal Pressure Possible

Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) crews will have to perform a test water valve closure on a 48” transmission main on Panola Street near Broadway as a part of the Water Hammer Hazard Mitigation Program. Crews will begin closing the valve on Thursday, March 16, 2023, beginning at noon. The test closure is expected to last until 9 p.m. on Thursday.
This 48” water main supplements much of the water supply to the Central Business District and the Garden District resulting in potential lower-than-normal water pressure.
While a significant pressure drop is not anticipated, some customers may experience slightly lower than normal pressure, especially upper floors of multi-story buildings. This test closure is in advance of work that is scheduled to begin on Friday morning and last over the weekend.
If all goes well with the test closure, the 48” water valve will be closed again beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday, March 17 and is expected to be closed until Sunday, March 19 around noon.
While the test closure and work are underway, crews will monitor water pressure throughout the city. If pressures dip below 20 psi, we will notify the public of the need for a precautionary boil water advisory.
