SWBNO and USACE to Host Neighborhood Information Meeting for General DeGaulle Drive Canal Improvements

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, November 20, 2019 1:15 PM

New Orleans – The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) and the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will host a neighborhood information meeting to discuss drainage improvements on General DeGaulle Drive from Wall Boulevard to Behrman Place.  The meeting will be held Thursday, November 21, 2019, 6 p.m. at the Algiers Regional Library, 3014 Holiday Drive in New Orleans, Louisiana.  All interested residents are encouraged to attend.

The project will consist of widening the General DeGaulle Drive canal from Wall Boulevard to Behrman Place.  The $14.2 million base bid contract, on General DeGaulle Drive between Behrman Place and Westbend Parkway/Garden Oaks Drive, was awarded to B&K Construction Co., LLC. in September 2019.  Construction of the base bid contract is expected to begin December 2019 and last until Fall 2021.  If funding becomes available, three additional sections will be constructed to extend the project from Westbend Parkway/Garden Oaks Drive to Wall Boulevard.

The General DeGaulle Drive canal work is part of the Algiers area drainage improvements through the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Program (SELA), which include multiple projects at a total estimated cost of $506 million.  As funds for the Algiers area drainage improvement projects are secured in future SWBNO and federal budgets, additional identified projects will be designed and awarded.
