The S. Claiborne Transmission Main Project is replacing several 100- to 120- year old drinking water transmission mains with newer pipes. These efforts will help stabilize water pressure in many parts of Orleans Parish.
This method involves Compression Fit Lining, which lines the inside of an existing pipe with newer pipe. As a result, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) can replace large sections of transmission main without open cuts in the roadway, allowing work to be:
- Quicker
- Less Disruptive
- More Cost Effective
For this project, SWBNO is using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, which is more durable than traditional pipes. We can fuse section together and avoid joints that are susceptible to leaks.
FUNDING
The Transmission Main Program is FEMA-funded and managed by SWBNO in cooperation with the City of New Orleans as part of the Joint Infrastructure Recovery Roads (JIRR) Program.
Total cost for S. Claiborne Ave. Transmission Main: $25.5 Million
SWBNO, along with our contractor BLD Services, Inc. and sub-contractor CMG Pipelines, Inc. is working to replace around 3,500 feet of 48-inch pipe and around 1,000 feet of 30-inch pipe.
Traffic impacts are expected on S. Claiborne between Tulane Stadium until early 2024. The transmission main is expected to come online by the end of 2023.
Transmission Main Projects
The replacement of the water main on S. Claiborne is a large Transmission Main (project name TM003) that SWBNO has replaced since 2018. There are 6 future transmission main projects scheduled and an additional 5 projects are currently underway. These projects are needed to proactively replace water lines as part of SWBNO’s commitment to infrastructure resiliency and reliability, as outlined in our five-year strategic plan.
