UPDATED TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Water Service Repairs Continue on Canal Street at N. Carrollton; 2 lanes remain closed

For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 10, 2019 2:21 PM

Crews working for the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) are continuing work to insert temporary water system valves on Canal Street near North Carrollton Avenue. The repairs may cause low water pressure for businesses and residents in the immediate area.

The left and center lakebound lanes on Canal Street have been closed to traffic since Monday to allow our contractor, Wallace C. Drennan Inc., to replace a broken valve on a 24-inch-diameter water main. Those lanes, closed for one block between North Carrollton and North Pierce Street, are expected to reopen Friday evening after the project is completed. The right, curbside lane remains open to traffic, but we advise motorists to avoid the area if possible until the work is done.

About the Project

The temporary valves will be used to reduce or eliminate water flow through a section of the water main in order to replace a broken valve. Once the permanent valve is replaced, the temporary insertions will be removed.

We use valves across New Orleans' water distribution system to better control or reroute the flow of drinking water throughout the city when we must conduct scheduled repairs or respond to water main breaks and other emergencies.
