SWBNO SUBSTATION FACT SHEET
Building a dedicated substation at the Sewerage & Water Board will replace the existing, outdated power generation equipment with a modernized system designed to power our city’s drainage and water pumps in a reliable, resilient, and cost-effective manner.
Project Components and Funding
Component | Cost | Funding Source |
Substation | $34 million | Entergy New Orleans |
Two Frequency Changers | $20 million | City of New Orleans |
Integration System* | $20 million | State Capital Outlay Funds |
Modernized System | Total Cost: $74 million |
Why This Plan?
- Allows SWBNO to fund project without increased cost to SWBNO ratepayers
- $20M City contribution creates $44M in savings
- Aligns Entergy investment with ownership of substation and City investment with ownership of all other aspects of the project (frequency changers, integration)
Significant Citywide Benefits:
- Increased and consistent reliability - power coming directly from transmission line, unaffected by weather, outages, old turbine failures
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Operational savings for SWBNO based on system efficiency and reduced O&M costs
- Improved quality of life for the surrounding neighborhood
