Pumping and Power Update: Turbines 4 and 5 Unavailable, Back-up Power Currently Draining Streets

For Immediate Release: Saturday, December 2, 2023 9:59 AM

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans is experiencing power issues this morning, which is causing localized street flooding in Carrollton, Mid City, Central City, Gentilly, Broodmore and Lakeview.

Turbine 4 went offline on Saturday morning and crews continued utilizing 25 Hz power in the form of frequency converters and EMDs. Turbine 5 has been unavailable since November.

Drainage Pumping Stations 1, 2, 6, and 7 are running at a reduced capacity. The single pump at Drainage Pumping Station 12 was down, but crews were able to divert power to the station just after 9 a.m.

If no more rain falls this morning, crews anticipate that the streets will be clear by noon today.

With Turbines 4 and 5 down, high intensity rain is going to cause localized street flooding. SWBNO Teams are monitoring the weather closely and we advise our residents to stay weather aware. Follow @NOLAReady for updates or text NOLAREADY to 77295.
