Sewer Force Main Break and Emergency Bypass Initiated by Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans

For Immediate Release: Monday, July 10, 2023 10:30 AM

The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) has issued an alert regarding a 60-inch sewer force main break at Station D, located at 2800 Florida Avenue. In response to this situation, SWBNO has initiated an emergency bypass to divert the flow to the Mississippi River.

The emergency plan was activated on Friday, July 7, in accordance with all relevant Federal and State regulatory authorities. Presently, there are no reported impacts on customers. SWBNO is closely monitoring the situation and will communicate any changes that may arise.

SWBNO crews have accessed the aging pipe, which is over 60 years old, for repair and extent of the damage has proven to be more severe than initially anticipated. Crews and contractors are actively working to assess the full scope of the necessary repairs and have mobilized additional resources to expedite the process. A plan of action and contingencies are in place to address the damage and repair the main in the short term. A long-term solution includes a full replacement of the aging main segment.

SWBNO Executive Director Ghassan Korban expressed his commitment to explore every available option and resource to address the situation as quickly as possible. He also emphasized that the emergency bypass is crucial to prevent backups in homes, highlighting the importance of this swift and decisive action.

To ensure effective coordination and response, SWBNO has been in direct communication with the relevant regulatory authorities, as well as emergency personnel, including neighboring water utilities.

We appreciate the public's cooperation and understanding as SWBNO works to resolve this issue and minimize any potential inconveniences for the community.
